This post invites hashtag#People leaders in HR and across the business to (briefly) pause, reflect and make conscious decisions about their hashtag#strategichr focus.
Strategic People and hashtag#Talent "work" can suffer from bad reputation, seen as not urgent, unsuitable for times of significant change, or of little value, and the first to be stopped. However, when we think about what being strategic entails, it touches the essence of making change work: it starts with clear directives on the 'Why' (the problem we are trying to solve), 'Who' (with and for whom), and 'When' (compelling event). The 'How' is then shaped by a multitude of situational factors, including budget, resources, the journey, change, and readiness.
Taking a broader view, in nature, "Fight and Flight" are both highly strategic, and we can draw excellent parallels to how these apply to hashtag#peoplestrategy.
Fight adheres to essentials for your survival, and that and should continue driving despite change. A skills-based organisation, for instance, is such for many organisations nowadays. Investing in Leaders is another.
Flight, on the other hand, is in fact a pivot, a timely shift from what you do to what you need to do. In both nature and organisations, flight is not a weakness but a powerful change of focus or direction, taken to address the essential.
Freeze, the least understood response in nature, is different. Beyond the initial conservation of energy, it can pose significant risks if maintained for too long.
Simply put, catching ourselves procrastinate around important people plans and actions can be costly.
As we look beyond "solutions" and "processes" to what truly needs to be created and why, we move past "best practices" and “nice-to-haves” to the core of what really matters. And when that’s happens, we tackle real organisational challenges and lay the foundation for truly sustainable plans, anchored by clear needs, that pave the way forward.
